This is my second semester in the Master of Arts in Teaching program here at East Tennessee State University.  I received a Bachelors of Science in Integrated Science and Technology from James Madison University in 2005.  Though my desire to work as a glorified lab rat has fizzled, my love for math and science has not.  I hope to one day teach math and science to upper elementary or middle school students.

The projects I created for this course were based on the Tennessee State Curriculum Standards for fifth grade science – specifically, the solar system.  Listed below are the sites I used for my projects as well as a few general sites that have excellent information.

Educational Sites

http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/profile.cfm?Object=Mercury&Display=Kids – NASA’s website geared toward kids.  Easy to follow with access to pages on each of the planets plus other major bodies in our solar system.  Each page has articles plus a separate “Go Figure” section with neat facts.

http://www.kids-and-space.com/index.htm - “with Peter and Paul around the galaxy” also has information about each of the planets plus the sun and moon.  Each planet page has an easy to read fact table with key information/characteristics.

http://www.brainpop.com/ - BrainPop – one of my favorite interactive sites.  Log in as “usstudent” with “student” password to access curriculum based activities for all subjects and most grade levels.  Each topic has a BrainPop video with quiz and a guided in-class activity.

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/ - National Geographic’s website for kids.  A wonderful site for science teachers with access to videos, games, activities, and stories that can be adapted for many science-based curriculum standards.

http://www.pbs.org/teachers/ - PBS website for teachers.  Access standard-based activities for subjects at all grade levels by selecting grade range and topic.
