""I
was one of Them:
the Strange Ones. The Funny People. The
Odd Tribes of autograph collectors and photographers. The Ones who waited
through long days and nights, who used other people's dreams for their lives."
Ray Bradbury used these words
to describe his adolescence spent in Los Angeles, California. He met as
many movie stars as he could and truly experienced Hollywood in the 1930s.
Now he describes Los Angeles as "...the illusion that must be seen to be
believed." Young Ray was enchanted with the movie star atmosphere in which
he found himself immersed when his family moved from middle town America,
Waukegan, Illinois. These two distinct parts of his childhood are alluded
to many times in his writings. He regards the two cities as paradoxes of
America. On one end of the spectrum, L.A. is the city of the future and
the vortex of popular culture, and on the opposite end is small town America
Waukegan where everyone knows everyone and life is simple and seemingly boring.
Bradbury exalts the many facets of our culture in his novels, short stories,
poetry, and other dramatic exploits bringing life to the mundane and genuine
enthusiasm to his readers.
A NOTE ON THE CREATOR: An avid lover of Ray Bradbury, Stephanie Witt was first introduced to his brilliance by her father in 1998. The Illustrated Man captivated her thirteen-year-old imagination and spurred her to read more of his masterpieces, sometimes several times over. She went from The Martian Chronicles to Golden Apples of the Sun to Something Wicked This Way Comes to numerous others. This web site is not only a culmination of Ray Bradbury's achievements and publications but also Stephanie's endearing admiration for one of the greatest science fiction writers alive today...except her father of course. In the absence of his influence, no other could have inspired her to create this web site.
